What do you value?
Sticking to my claim that I provide ‘Practical Astrology for Modern Life’, today I’m offering up a bit of astro mixed with some positive psychology. I think the two work fairly well together. While there are many strands of astrology, I focus on the self-help kind, trying to get people back in touch with themselves so that they can find more satisfaction in their life. This can come via self knowledge and acceptance, taking pause to get perspective and having forewarning of when trickier times might require more grit than usual.
Positive Psychology also aims to get people flourishing by living with meaning, engagement and positive emotions. Often this occurs when we’re living aligned with our values.
In astrology ‘values’ are generally ruled by the planet Venus - this incorporates what we like, how we relate to others and what gives us pleasure. The zodiac sign that your Venus sits in will filter what you value. For example, with Venus in Sagittarius you might value adventure and spontaneity. In Capricorn you might value responsibility and achievement. Venus shifts signs every month or so.
Adding to the astro mix, Jupiter is the planet that guides what we believe in. Changing signs just once a year it’s a ‘social’ planet - your Jupiter sign will be the same as most people born in your year. It adds nuance to your values, bringing in bigger picture themes such as faith, purpose and meaning.
Together, Venus and Jupiter in the natal chart neatly describe your ‘values’ as seen from a more traditional psychological standpoint.
Which is where we land today. As Jupiter makes its annual sign shift - this year into Cancer - it’s a perfect time to check in with your personal values to see what’s important for you right now. Values change as our life and priorities shift, so it’s worthwhile checking in with yourself from time to time. Take a few minutes to ponder this values help sheet. This is more of a positive psychology exercise, but whether you’re a straight science lover or a full woo-woo devotee, it’s always good to be reminded of what your personal priorities are right now. Once you clarify your current position, you can have a think about how you can live more aligned to your desired values. Brainstorm activities and actions that will help to get you living your best life.
